The Art Teacher
“There I was in uniform
Looking at the art teacher
I was just a girl then;
Never have I loved since then
He was not that much older than I was
He had taken our class to the Metropolitan Museum
He asked us what our favorite work of art was,
But never could I tell it was him
Oh, I wish I could tell him --
Oh, I wish I could have told him
I looked at the Ruben's and Rembrandt's
I liked the John Singer Sargent's
He told me he liked Turner
Never have I turned since then
No, never have I turned to any other man
All this having been said,
I married an executive company head
All this having been done, a Turner - I own one...
Here I am in this uniformish, pant-suit sort of thing,
Thinking of the art teacher
I was just a girl then;
Never have I loved since then
No, never have I loved any other man”
Music Story of the Week
I have adored Rufus for such a long, long time. Ever since his first album. I am a devotee of his intricate lyrics, his lush orchestral stylings and his beautiful mesmerizing drone of a voice. I fell for this song on my way to Mexico for a Christmas alone. I remember the precise moment when this song altered me just enough that, as I leaned my forehead against the glass and peered down at the endless dry rolling land mass, the tears streamed down my cheeks. I ached for the girl in the song. I ached for me. And then I became a deeply melancholy happy.
I normally choose an artist that has some new release or tour going, yet today I chose Rufus because Ky did too. She chose to include this song on her beautifully created and thought out mix cd for the storytellers swap that she spearheaded a while back. She knew nothing of how this song had altered me almost two years ago. She didn't know that I had included this very same song on the mix I made and sent to two other bloggers in the swap. No, but she reminded me that sometimes the Universe aligns just so and everything comes right back around again.

oh my goodness! this brought tears to my eyes, the realization (perhaps reminder is more adequate) of our interconnectedness....=)
He's delicious isn't he?
It's so lovely to stumble across another fan of Rufus Wainwright - happy holdiays!
